Can I bring my own motorcycle to the course?

In Pennsylvania, you may bring your own bike if it’s insured and street legal. For other states, check the specific requirements and ensure you follow the guidelines regarding accompanying riders, as detailed in the “Resources – Terms and Conditions” section.

What are the gear requirements for the course?

The course requires that riders must have the appropriate riding gear, which includes a DOT certified helmet, eye protection, long sleeve shirt or jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants (no ripped jeans, sweat pants or other soft material) and over-the-ankle boots or high-top shoes made from firm, durable materials, excluding canvas, mesh, elastic, nylon, or any other soft fabrics. For additional information, please visit the “Resources – Terms and Conditions” section on the company website.

What are the differences between BRC and BRC2?

BRC is designed for beginners and includes 16 hours of training covering safety and road skills. This training includes an online eCourse and in-person riding. BRC2 is for riders with some experience and involves 11 hours focusing on advanced safety and road skills. More details are available in the “Courses” section of our website.

Which course should I take?

Choose a course based on your riding experience level. We offer courses for beginners to advanced riders. Visit the “Courses” section on our website for more information.

Do you provide a motorcycle during training? If yes, what kind and what is the cost?

The Motorcycle Safety Academy offers motorcycles for student use in both the Basic Rider Course (BRC) and the Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2) for Intermediate riders. Students enrolled in the BRC2 have the option to use a school-provided motorcycle or bring their own. In our 2-wheel courses, the motorcycles are generally cruiser-style with 250cc engines. For 3-wheel courses, we provide CanAm Spyders or Rykers in various configurations. Unlike some companies that may charge additional fees for using their motorcycles or impose hidden insurance costs if the motorcycles are dropped or damaged, we do not charge extra or have hidden fees. We understand that accidents can happen during training, and we prioritize our students’ safety and peace of mind, ensuring they can focus on learning without concerns about incidental costs.

What safety gear will I be required to wear?

Riders must have the appropriate riding gear, which includes a DOT certified helmet, eye protection, long sleeve shirt or jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants (no ripped jeans, sweat pants or other soft material) and over-the-ankle boots or high-top shoes made from firm, durable materials, excluding canvas, mesh, elastic, nylon, or any other soft fabrics.

Do I need to bring anything to the first course session?

In most courses, students will begin riding motorcycles during the first session. It is essential that all riders wear the proper gear, which includes a DOT-certified helmet, eye protection, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants (excluding ripped jeans, sweatpants, or any other soft materials), and over-the-ankle boots or high-top shoes constructed from sturdy, durable materials other than canvas, mesh, elastic, nylon, or similar fabrics. Additionally, if required, please bring your eCourse completion certificate along with a copy of your driver’s license and a valid learner’s permit (necessary for courses in Pennsylvania).

Do I need a learners permit prior to the start of the course?

We suggest that all course participants have the ability to ride a bicycle.

Maryland: For the BRC Course (including any variations like the BRCSP), there are no prerequisites, and a learner’s permit is not required. However, the ability to ride a bicycle is recommended.

Pennsylvania: For the BRC Course (including variations such as the BRCSP), there are no prerequisites. However, residents of Pennsylvania must have a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle license. Again, we recommend that participants be capable of riding a bicycle.

For further details on course requirements, please consult the Resource Center for state-specific guidelines.

If I don’t pass either the written or riding portion of the class, what is the process to retake the test?

There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass, or get their license.

Maryland: Participants who do not pass the Knowledge Test (written) or the Skill Test (riding) may be given one (1) opportunity to retake these tests. Retests need to be scheduled by the participant directly on the website and must be completed within thirty (30) days of the original course end date. The cost of the retest is free. If a person does not pass the retest, he/she must retake the course and pay the appropriate fees.

Pennsylvania: Retests are not allowed.

What time do I need to report to the course?

Each course starts promptly at the time noted in the schedule. Each student must realize that if a person is late for a course, he/she will not be allowed to continue. Each student must also understand that if a course has started, he/she is not entitled to a refund and must re-register for another course and pay the appropriate fees. We recommend that each student arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to the start of the course and allow plenty of time for traffic, weather, etc.
